1 What do I need to run Ripstation?

To run Ripstation on a desktop or laptop you would need the following:

  • 32 bit Windows XP with SP2, Vista or Windows 7
  • Microsoft .NET 2.0
  • Always on internet connection
  • Windows Media Player 11 and above
  • User Account with Administrative privileges

2 Can I rip to a NAS or USB device?

We strongly recommend against ripping across a network or to a USB device. This is for two reasons.

  • Firstly, the speed of the ripping process slows down dramatically when ripping to a NAS or USB device. This speed decrease is independent of any network, cable or device speed and is related to how information is sent and received while ripping.
  • Also errors can occur in the files when ripping to a NAS or USB device, that become evident during playback.

So our recommendation is to rip to the local drive and transfer the content to the USB or NAS after the batch has been completed

3 Why am I getting the “Unable to Enable Autorun” Error

If you are trying to run the software on Vista or Windows 7 and get an “Unable to Enable Autorun” Error you will have to make some adjustments to the User Account Control (UAC) settings as the application requires access to a registry key to determine the auto insert status.

Vista
Go to the control panel> user accounts> and uncheck the turn on user account control box. Then you will need to reboot the PC after which the software will be fully functional.
Windows 7
Go to the control panel> user accounts> and select the User Account Control bar and set this to Zero. Then you will need to reboot the PC after which the software will be fully functional.

4 Will my programs run on Vista and Windows 7?

Yes but there a few steps you will need to take.

First of all ensure that the software is installed on a user account with Administrative privileges.

Secondly, run the application in Windows Service Pack 2 compatibility mode for optimal performance. This can be done by right clicking on the desktop shortcut and clicking on properties from the drop down menu. Then click on the Find Target button which will open up the Ripstation program folder. Then right click on the Ripstation.exe and choose properties from the drop down menu. Then click on the compatibility tab on the next window and select compatibility with service pack 2.

Then thirdly you will also need to make adjustments to the User Account Control as listed below:

5 Why am I getting “The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect” Error

If you are receiving this error dialog first of all check that you have .net Framework 2.0 and all the supporting files installed. You can download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86) from the following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

Once you have installed .net 2.0, and if you are still receiving the error try the next step.

This step is to install some Microsoft C++ files that are missing from your Windows installation. The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) can be downloaded from the following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&DisplayLang=en

Once the .net 2.0 update has been installed, reboot the PC and the application will start normally.

6 My ripping is always slow, what can I do?

First of all make sure you are not ripping to a USB or NAS device as this will slow the ripping dramatically. Rip to the local drive to speed the process up.

Secondly if you are ripping to MP3 make sure that the quality slider is set to fastest as there is negligible difference in sound quality to the human ear than if it is set at slower level, even when played through high end systems.

7 How do I purchase more look ups for AMG?

To purchase more look ups for AMG click on the following web link:
http://www.ripstation.com/amgdep/purchase.php

Once the required amount has been purchased you will then receive an item number on an email from PayPal, this item number is the AMG look up code. Cut and paste this into the AMG box in the metadata preferences.

8 I can’t get metadata returns from AMG or FreeDB, why is this happening?

If you are behind a proxy server you will need to move Ripstation to the DMZ of your network to avoid proxy and firewall validation rules. Alternatively we recommend a straight direct wired connection that avoids using a proxy server.

9 I’m receiving “Windows cannot recognise disc” errors on the unit. Why is this?

First of all check that no other software is running and locking the drive.
Secondly ensure that Auto Insert is turned on. If it is an XP PC download and install the Auto Insert checker. If auto insert is turned on, then toggle it off and then on again. If it is Vista or Windows 7 ensure that UAC is turned off or set to Zero.
If the above steps have not worked then I would recommend reinstalling the software.
Finally if none of the above steps have worked then it means that Windows has a problem reading the disc. This can be because there is an issue with the drive, but, more often it means that there is an issue with the Windows installation and it is possible a full reinstall is required. Before attempting this step please contact technical support for assistance.

10 Where is there no folder.jpg cover art in the output album folders?

This can be for two reasons.
The first is that no cover art was returned from the metadata provider. To ensure maximum cover art returns make sure that AMG is your first preference as metadata provider and that Download Missing Covers from Amazon is also selected.
Secondly if cover art is embedded in the file but not visible in the album folder then it can mean that WMP is monitoring the output folder and therefore Windows regards the folder.jpg as a system file and hides it from view.

11 What are your recommendations for a lossless solution for a Windows PC?

Our recommendation would be to rip to either WMA Lossless or FLAC as they both have excellent metadata capabilities and have compatibility across many players and provide an identical lossless sound.

12 What are your recommendations for a lossless solution for an Apple PC?

I would recommend ripping to WMA Lossless then import the files into iTunes. Have the iTunes import set to Apple Lossless and iTunes will convert the files. This provides the customer with both Windows and Apple Lossless options.

13. I just purchased AMG lookups but have not received my code

Once the required amount has been purchased you will then receive an item number on an email from PayPal, this item number is the AMG look up code. Cut and paste this into the AMG box in the metadata preferences.
